"SD-WAN largely exists today to support two key enterprise transformations: multicloud and the software-defined branch (SD-Branch). Multicloud has changed the center of gravity for enterprise applications, and with that, has changed traffic patterns too. No longer does traffic need to flow to enterprise data center sites or central internet peering points and breakouts. That’s because most traffic from users and devices in the enterprise campus and branch today goes to cloud-based applications scattered across a host of clouds. It’s neither economical nor efficient to haul traffic over WAN-dedicated links to a central enterprise site. So to optimize the cost and performance of multicloud-bound traffic, modern WAN edge routers, often called customer premises equipment (CPE), are now equipped with hybrid WAN links and routing. Hybrid WAN interfaces may include WAN provider-dedicated links such as MPLS, as well as direct internet links over xDSL, broadband and 4G/LTE wireless."

The Time for the Hybrid WAN IT has gone through a significant evolution over the past decade. Virtualization has changed the entire face of the data center, the network edge has become predominantly wireless and consumer devices reign supreme. However, one of the few areas of IT that has yet to evolve is the corporate wide area network (WAN). Managing the WAN is something network managers have always struggled with because WAN speeds are typically an order of magnitude, or more, slower than local area networks (LANs).

Code updates happen for one main reason: safety improvement. NEC (National Electrical Code) Article 408.3 helps take electrical safety for service entrance panels to a new level. The code, updated in 2017, includes provisions to provide shock protection via panelboard barriers. The barriers protect from energized conductors on the line terminals of the main overcurrent protection device (OCPD) in a panelboard. When the main circuit breaker in a panel is turned off, line side terminals and conductors remain energized from upstream via the utility or another panelboard. With these barriers in place and the main OCPD turned off, installers are better protected when pulling wires into the panelboard. Today, all panelboards are shipped with shock-protective barriers. However, barriers are new to installation procedures, so contractors may not recognize them and accidentally throw them out—easily and often.

In businesses and organizations across the world, rooms once humming with wires, black boxes and blinking lights now sit empty. In a lonely phone closet, there’s only dust, a single lonely terminal, or perhaps a foosball table where IT pros can let off steam. The cloud – and more specifically, cloud communications – is the source of the transformation, which has fundamentally changed the IT landscape. Some IT pros have embraced it. Some are working on migrating to the cloud over time. And others, through choice or necessity, are sticking with a premises-based approach. Read on to find out why some IT pros are shopping for game tables to go in empty server rooms while others are untangling wires and watching blinking lights—and which cases make the most sense for each approach.

With a surge of 25,000 devices and counting, Dartmouth College needed its new Wi-Fi to be fast, reliable and as smart as its students. In response, Dartmouth, based in Hanover, N.H., began deploying new campus-wide Wi-Fi from Mist Systems last summer. It expects to complete the project throughout the campus in three to five years, according to Bryan Ward, a network engineer at Dartmouth. The IT department manages the Wi-Fi through a cloudbased wireless LAN and can already see the benefits of better coverage and easier management. But the team faced difficulties when embedding the new system with Dartmouth's centuries-old campus architecture, which is less supportive of campus-wide Wi-Fi than modern architecture. The following interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Network readiness is an important factor in any new IT project at companies both large and small. New applications seem to require more bandwidth than the applications that they replace. These applications can also bring in new users, sometimes by the thousands. In some cases, the network services and/or capacity are not ready for these changes, and the IT rollout suffers. This guide covers the following topics: bandwidth, wireless, firewalls, content filtering, proxy servers, and others.

This global corporation of quick service restaurants has about 17,500 locations serving millions of customers each day with concepts including popular pizza, chicken, and Tex-Mex chains. Most of the restaurants are on a wired network with Cisco routers, the main function of which is to process credit card purchases. With so many transactions taking place every day, the corporation decided to invest in a wireless failover system to guarantee uninterrupted connection. After careful consideration, the corporation chose Cradlepoint to provide “four-nines” (99.99% or better) connectivity via 3G/4G/LTE or wireless backup. - See more at: https://cradlepoint.com/success_stories/quick-service-restaurant-chain#sthash.ODr3J5uT.dpuf
