Wireless communications is on the cusp of the 5G revolution, which is widely touted as a boon for business and consumers. Change is coming, and that heralds significant challenges for government and its use of both fixed and mobile wireless networks. Here are six things agencies should know now about 5G.
"SD-WAN largely exists today to support two key enterprise transformations: multicloud and the software-defined branch (SD-Branch).
Multicloud has changed the center of gravity for enterprise applications, and with that, has changed traffic patterns too. No longer does traffic need to flow to enterprise data center sites or central internet peering points and breakouts. That’s because most traffic from users and devices in the enterprise campus and branch today goes to cloud-based applications scattered across a host of clouds.
It’s neither economical nor efficient to haul traffic over WAN-dedicated links to a central enterprise site. So to optimize the cost and performance of multicloud-bound traffic, modern WAN edge routers, often called customer premises equipment (CPE), are now equipped with hybrid WAN links and routing. Hybrid WAN interfaces may include WAN provider-dedicated links such as MPLS, as well as direct internet links over xDSL, broadband and 4G/LTE wireless."
The IoT is transforming the energy industry by eliminating tradeoffs between operation, SCADA systems, maintenance and new services for assets deployed in industrial and power facilities, buildings and across the grid.
When it comes to building the best IoT system for your business application, it’s vital to keep your use case and business requirements at the forefront of your technical design strategy. In the energy industry, accessing and collecting data at the edge from disparate, heterogenous, multi-site, fixed topologies and transferring that data efficiently to the cloud to perform analytics and action business decisions is still the greatest challenge. Mission-critical data collected from the edge is integral to energy facility operations and cannot be excluded or corrupted.
By simplifying the ability of companies to securely extract, orchestrate and act on data from when it is generated by energy assets to when it is transmitted to the cloud, Octave simplifies the development and commercialization of Energy IoT applications. With Octave, energy companies are empowered to realize the Energy IoT’s tremendous potential, with new demand response, energy efficiency optimization, predictive maintenance and other applications that maximize the value created by energy assets and minimize their environmental impact. In doing so, these Energy IoT applications can reduce energy costs, improve customer engagement, lower greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy reliability.

In addition to e-books, on-demand video and GPS devices, one of the future technological innovations envisioned by AT&T in its famous early 1990s series of “You Will” commercials was an Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system that enabled drivers to wirelessly pay their tolls as they drove through a toll booth. While that prediction was perhaps not as bold as the others (Europe began developing similar ETC systems in the 1980s), today we take for granted E-ZPass in the U.S. and similar systems where drivers can enter toll roads, HOV lanes, bridges and tunnels without having to stop at a tollbooth to pay.
Typically, these systems require a driver to put an OBU (On Board Unit, which can be called transponder or “edge” IoT device) in their vehicle and, when their vehicle passes through a toll booth, the toll booth wirelessly connects to the edge to automatically deduct the toll from their bank account.
For centuries, new technologies have ushered in entirely new eras of progressive change in all facets of life, and have revolutionized
countless industries. The invention of the steam engine brought about the industrial revolution and expanded trade and transportation.
Quantum physics was the foundation of the electronics revolution that brought us transistors, TV, radio, and computers. And the Internet
has brought about a stunning information and communication revolution, which is still sending shock waves across virtually every industry,
and to the very core of our cultures and lifestyles.
With a surge of 25,000 devices and counting, Dartmouth College needed its
new Wi-Fi to be fast, reliable and as smart as its students.
In response, Dartmouth, based in Hanover, N.H., began deploying new
campus-wide Wi-Fi from Mist Systems last summer. It expects to complete
the project throughout the campus in three to five years, according to Bryan
Ward, a network engineer at Dartmouth.
The IT department manages the Wi-Fi through a cloudbased wireless LAN and can already see the benefits of
better coverage and easier management. But the team faced difficulties when embedding the new system with
Dartmouth's centuries-old campus architecture, which is less supportive of campus-wide Wi-Fi than modern

Enterprise IT is changing. It’s evolving from a rigid, static, manually configured and managed architecture to one where connectivity is dynamic, application services are on demand, and processes are automated. Enterprise networking is evolving along with IT. This has been evident in the past several years in initiatives such as enterprise digitization and as-a-service consumption models, as well as their enablers, including BYOD, IoT and cloud. Add to this, all of the security implications of each initiative.
The evolution of IT requires a network that evolves along with IT’s changing requirements – a network that continuously adapts to ever-changing security threats, and evolving digitization, mobility, IoT and cloud requirements.
The purpose of this paper is to assess the switching requirements for next-generation campus networks incorporating wired switches, wireless LANs and WAN routers in an intuitive, intent-based network supporting cloud, mobility, IoT and digitization, with
